NEGATIVES OF CANBERRA?

From browsing the internet, many strong opinions about Canberra being a "boring country town" became apparent... here are a few reasons people believe Canberra to be not worthy of the Nation's Capital.

- Horrible weather (too cold in Winter, and too hot/dry in Summer)
- Too many public servants, making the people in Canberra "extremely dull"
- No culture
- No nightlife
- Poor arts and music scene
- Canberra's proudest moment is Floriade - the flower festival
- Too many roads, with a poor public transport system - you need a car, and spend a lot on petrol
- Lacks individuality
- Boredom and gloominess
- Because it is a planned city, it has "no soul".

Below is a quote from an online forum - it seems to sum up peoples opinions on the Nation's Capital.

"Canberra is the most depressing, horrible place in all existence. I moved here a few days ago for work and since then I feel like I have been sucked into a big, lifeless vortex. I've never felt so down in my life.

I feel like I've lost my soul, zest for life, sense of self. I really feel like I'm disappearing. I've been to a lot of places in the world but I've never quite experienced anything quite like this. This is a dead city. Everything is dead. There is no life, culture, diversity, individuality, creativity, art, energy, music, life. Usually I can connect pretty well with my environment but I don't feel anything here. There is no energy is anything- not even in nature. Even the trees feel dead, they are like display trees, planted in a perfectly straight row in manufactured parks where you never see a soul.

The dreary bus ride to work that awaits me tomorrow fills me with a sense of dread. All you see is long, grey, never-ending roads surrounded by gloomy, ugly government buildings, a bunch of suits walking around looking like they are from the Matrix, the lifeless manufactured parks, the countless road work signs; thick, wet, yellow mud, cars, cars, cars, dry grass and shrubs and a few
lifeless parks.

The only place Canberrans seem to go is the shopping centre and I'm quite sure 90% of the population is there at any given time; it is a nightmare, a horrific nightmare just purchasing something simple. You will spend hours just trying to find your way, the shopping centre, like the city, is so poorly designed. There are so many beautiful places in this world. To waste any more of my time in this God-awful place feels like a death sentence. Actually, I feel dead already. I will never understand why anyone would like it here. Never."
